Nu Jade (2018 - 20)

Keywords: anthropocene, whose hands, e-waste, amulet, nu jade

Jade ornaments are worn in many cultures as a protection and to ward off the evil. But the apotropaic function associated with these pieces of jewellery - and with jade, a stone extracted from the earth and revered for thousands of years - is here distorted: on closer inspection, the stone-like material is rendered in compressed, recomposed shreds of discarded CPU boards. Can this material, used for CPU boards to govern functions such as industrial control, communication, data processing, be seen as a nu jade, on which the value systems of our contemporaneity are based? Will it eventually become a hybrid rock - a fossil of our world - in a hypothetical future, when archaeologists will dig it up from the depths of the earth?
